Life is sweet in Mississippi, but that may not be a good thing.

The Magnolia State tops the nation for soda and fruit drink consumption, according to a new 24/7 Wall St. report based on data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 18 states, more than one-fourth of adults (26 percent) consume sweetened-beverages such as regular soda and fruit drinks at least once daily. “These types of drinks are one of the primary sources of added sugars in U.S. diets and have been associated with a range of negative health outcomes,” the 24/7 Wall St. report states.

“Rising consumption of sugary drinks—soda, energy, sports drinks-- has been a major contributor to the obesity epidemic,” according to a fact sheet posted on the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health website. A typical 20-ounce soda contains 15 to 18 teaspoons of sugar and upwards of 240 calories. A 64-ounce fountain cola drink could have up to 700 calories.  Sugary drinks are the top calorie source in teens’ diets (226 calories per day), beating out pizza (213 calories per day).

Two out of three adults and one out of three children in the United States are overweight or obese and the nation spends an estimated $190 billion a year treating obesity-related health conditions.  But in addition to obesity, sugary drink consumption is also associated with diabetes, heart disease, and gout.

Sugary drinks are aggressively marketed, especially toward youth. The 27/7 Wall St. rankings of the worst states for sugary drink consumption note CDC findings that sugary drinks are frequently granted greater advertising space in grocery stores located in the Southern United States, where three of the five top states for sugar consumption are located.

These are the five states with the highest sugar consumption.
