Where the Grads Are: Top 10 Destination Cities

A new LinkedIn study finds that freshly-minted college grads are going to destination cities as far flung as Paris and Bangalore in search of the most fertile ground to start their careers.

Hey, college grad! You just got your diploma; what are you going to do next? Go to Disneyland? Move in to mom and dad’s basement? According to a new LinkedIn study, these freshly-minted college grads are going to destination cities as far flung as Paris and Bangalore in search of the most fertile ground to start their careers.

Professional networking site LinkedIn analyzed the migration patterns of its members up to three years out of college over the past year to determine the top 10 destination cities for recent graduates. The data centered on moves greater than 100 miles from starting city to destination city) and that included more than 100 LinkedIn  members.

Here, in ascending order, are LinkedIn’s guide to where the grads are and who’s hiring:

Sao Paulo, Brazil

34 percent of new residents in 2013 were recent college grads. The major companies hiring new grads: ITAU, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Telefònica, HSBC, GE.

Bangalore

34 percent of new residents in 2013 were recent college grads. The major companies hiring new grads: Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Mu Sigma.

San Francisco Bay Area

34 percent of new residents in 2013 were recent college grads. The major companies hiring new grads: Google, Oracle, Apple, Cisco, Facebook.

London

35 percent of new residents in 2013 were recent college grads. The major companies hiring new grads: Barclays, JP Morgan Chase, HSBC, Goldman, Sachs, KPMG. 

Chicago

38 percent of new residents in 2013 were recent college grads. The major companies hiring new grads: Deloitte, Accenture, PWC, Ernst & Young, Groupon.

New York City

38 percent of new residents in 2013 were recent college grads. The major companies hiring new grads: JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi, IBM.

Madrid

40 percent of new residents in 2013 were recent college grads. The major companies hiring new grads: Telefònica, Deloitte, PWC, BBVA, Accenture.

Minneapolis-St. Paul

40 percent of new residents in 2013 were recent college grads. The major companies hiring new grads: Target, 3M, General Mills, Wells Fargo, Cargill.

Washington D.C.

40 percent of new residents in 2013 were recent college grads. The major companies hiring new grads: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Defense, World Bank, Booz Allen Hamilton, U.S. Department of Commerce.

Paris

42 percent of new residents in 2013 were recent college grads. The major companies hiring new grads: BNP Paribas, L'Oréal, LVMH, EDF, Société Générale.
